Khachen Wines
The estate farms a high-elevation vineyard and runs a modern winery in Vayots Dzor, on gentle slopes at roughly 1400–1430 m and seven miles from the Areni-1 cave complex. It was founded by Alek Harounian, Narine Hakobyan and Arbi Harounian. Areni Noir, thick-skinned and low in pH, is the core variety, the white comes from Khatun Kharji and Voskehat, and the rosé from rocky volcanic soils. The range covers Areni, Areni Reserve, a white and a rosé; the winemaker trained at UC Davis and in the Napa Valley.
