Tufenkian Wines
The wine venture of James Tufenkian, the Armenian-American entrepreneur known for hand-knotted Armenian carpets and the Tufenkian Heritage hotels, run in partnership with Yves Dietrich of the Alsace house Achille. In 2020–21 the project bought 28 ha near Chiva village close to Areni, including 2.5 ha of long-abandoned old vines, and built its own winery in 2022. The vineyards sit at 1,250–1,500 m and are farmed organically and biodynamically; wines ferment on native yeasts and are neither fined nor filtered. The range draws on Voskehat, Khatoun Kharji, Spitak Areni, Chilar, Areni and Tozot, with the Chiva vines dating from the mid-1970s. The winemaker is Zara Kechechyan.
