Areni
Areni, also called Sev Areni, is Armenia’s best-known indigenous red grape. It is found in almost every wine zone of the country but is concentrated in western Vayots Dzor, in the Arpa river valley, and takes its name from the village of Areni, near which a winery dated to about 4100 BC was excavated. Young Areni wines are deeply coloured, with marked acidity and freshness, and the variety also responds well to ageing in Armenian oak.
